TS #1: PJ
Date/Time: Thursday, Jan 7, 6:30-7:30
Date/Time: Thursday, Jan 7, 6:30-7:30
Location: Hecht Hall
Topic/Skills: Homework assistance with worksheet, reading
review, and discussion
Feedback provided to
tutee: Tutor allowed student to do
his own work (“I can’t do your homework, but you can.”) When the student
had a wrong answer, the tutor redirected him (“Are you sure?” “I think there is a better one.”) and let the
student correct himself. Student is a
good reader, but made some pronunciation errors that the tutor corrected by
restating correctly.
Lessons learned: The tutor was skillful in following the
“discontinuous interest threads,” taking the method of skill development where the
student wanted to go. What started out
as a homework completion/review session ended up a discussion about the Wild
West and the pioneers who settled the territory. This was a different topic, but the session
was not “off-topic.” Rather the tutor
allowed it to shift from specific work to free conversation.
