Date/Time: 14 January 2016, 2-2:50pm
Topic/Skill: Listening (Level 1)
Teacher Presentation: The teacher began with a review of recent material and upcoming dates. She placed a great emphasis on hand motions/ gestures as she spoke. For the majority of the class, the students worked on a short activity in their binders. They began by identifying pictures, predicting what the listening activity would be about based on this, and discussing it with their groups. Next, they listened to dialogues, took notes, and discussed this with partners again before doing so as a class.
Classroom Management: The instructor appeared rather firm in her teaching style, reprimanding students for guessing about due dates when they did not know the answers. It seemed to encourage them to be more thoughtful of their answers. She allowed the students the flexibility to work in groups, but she paid close attention to their dialogues and jumped in as needed.
Materials: Student Binders, White Board and Marker (for announcements), Projector, Audio Files
Student Participation: Students were called upon randomly for about half the time, and they were asked to volunteer during other parts. Most were willing to participate although they seemed less focused than more advanced students. All gave answers when called upon though, even if incorrect.
Feedback Provided: The teacher gave direct and constant feedback to student responses verbally.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I now have an idea of the type of controlled environment that is necessary for a lower level class. I saw the dynamics of allowing some level of student-guided activities and having the teacher fully lead the activity. Some variation is permitted in a level 1 class.
