During the third session with my adult ESL students, the class was given a brief explanation of what a modal verb is, how to form it, and when it is used. As this was a reading lesson, I did not focus any of our time on learning how to form modal verb phrases but rather emphasized meaning and content. The activity consisted of reading 3 short stories about daily errands and activities that Americans do everyday. The lesson was popular among students. Many of them said they liked the feeling of reading something in English and understanding it without having to decipher the meaning of every word before hand. I also got a good chance to work with them on their pronunciation. I was happy to see students reminding each other of how words are said and correcting each other’s pronunciation errors.
