Michael TS#13

Tutee: Matt and David
Date/Time: 2/19
Location: Leon County Public Library
Topic/Skill: vocabulary in writing
Feedback provided to tutee: Although I'm focusing more on grammar with one tutee and more on varying the other's writing, I really focused today on vocabulary in writing, adapting my strategy for each tutee. For the one who needs more help on grammar, we worked on the correct use of prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions, a/an, and the like, in his writing, and with the other tutee I focused on pure vocab. I'm not sure how efficacious my strategy with the latter tutee is, but in regards to the former, I think it really helped him to see immediate correction and personalized explanations for his grammar and vocabulary errors.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I am slowly figuring out an optimal approach to "vocabulary in writing". It seemed, at least with the tutee who doesn't need grammar help, that giving him a writing topic and then going over vocabulary might be a better order to work in. It was almost as if, in seeing the words beforehand, his subconscious started to fit them into the topic he was later going to write about. He was asking vocabulary usage questions that fit into the topic ("how can i use this word/is this word correct in this specific context"). Kind of like "vocab inception." His writing was much more enjoyable to read today, and so I plan to use this approach in the future.
