Hawk TS #3 PJ

During our third session, PJ needed help with his math homework again. This time, we were adding and subtracting fractions. As was the case in our previous session, he had problems understanding exactly what was being asked of him. Like before, I thought that his comprehension problems would be alleviated if I asked him to explain in his own words what he had learned about fractions in his latest math lesson. He explained that they learned that he and the other students learned that fractions can be added and subtracted if they have a common denominator. We discussed what this meant and I helped him verbalize the process. Just like before, as soon as he was able to express what was being asked of him in the instructions, he was able to complete the assignment with more ease. To keep him talking, I asked him to talk me through the remaining questions. After the ending of the session, he had a better understanding of the assignment and also how to talk about fractions.
