For our fifth session, PJ needed help with a writing assignment. He was given the assignment to write a persuasive paper about why students should be allowed to learn how to play instruments at school. Before I arrived, he had already made an outline of the paper with another tutor. However, it was not to his liking so we started from square one. As we were writing, I noticed that PJ had difficulty expounding on his ideas. As a way around this problem, I simply talked to him about his clarinet, and why he likes music. As he spoke, I helped him organize and organize his ideas on paper. Anytime he would stall, I would go back to our dialogue which always seemed to help move the process along. I also helped him smooth out the edges of his writings by encouraging him to think about transition words or combining sentences. Conversely, I was very proud of his final draft because he did a good job organizing the paper and it was well thought out.
