Michael TS #7

Tutee: Maria
Date/Time: 2/15 @ 10:00
Location: Lounge
Topic/Skill: active/passive, transitive/intransitive
Feedback provided to tutee: A better explanation of the structures of sentences in the active and passive voices, as well as sentences using intransitive and transitive verbs. We did some sentence diagrams and I think that helped considerably.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I understand the concepts of transitive and intransitive  verbs well because this is actually pretty evident in Arabic, and so it was cool to see the overlap between that and English, as an inherent aspect of language. Thus, it was easy to explain, despite Maria's first language being Spanish. I might have provided a few more examples, something I need to improve upon with every concept when I am teaching in the future. This session also helped me to better understand the uses of the passive voice, as I didn't really understand that prior to my preparation for the session. This has been a recurring theme throughout my tutorings, and it has been immensely helpful, because we take a lot of the concepts of English (or any first language for that matter) for granted, without truly understanding the underlying uses and meanings.
