Tutee: Maria
Date/Time: 2/10 @ 10:00
Location: Lounge
Topic/Skill: pronunciation, time, mock dentist office scenario
Feedback provided to tutee: Empathy for how confusing English can be (see temporal/spatial "past" situation below). Also a brief review of pronunciation work from the previous days, and pronunciation and spelling correction and vocab introduction for the speaking activity
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that sometimes you need to think outside the box in order to explain concepts. For example, she kept affiliating expressions such as "half-past" with the temporal meaning of the word "past", which really has nothing to do with the expression, counter-intuitively. I explained the concept instead in a spatial sense, writing 2:00 and 3:00 (example) and showing how their mid-point is "past", or physically beyond the 2:00. I used other examples as well, and despite the provisional quality of that segment of the lesson, she felt she understood the material better, and in fact performed better than she would have earlier expected on her listening test on time expressions.
