Michael TS #4

Tutee: Maria
Date/Time: 2/8 @ 10:00
Location: Lounge
Topic/Skill: Pronunciation and vocab integration in speech
Feedback provided to tutee: mostly praise and encouragement that she was already taking my suggestions for improving her flow of thought (see TS #3). Also reinforcement of the idea that fluency starts with the thought process and is not a matter of translating things in your head before you even open your mouth. Further suggestions of reading news articles or short stories in English (shorter materials since tutee is very busy) that will allow her to see how other people express themselves, and maybe get some ideas of words/phrases/structures to incorporate. Explanations of phonetic charts (consonants and vowels) and introductions to "sound pairs" (s/z, p/b). Covered each problem pair briefly but will go more in depth in the sessions to come.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I find that I have a good number of ideas of small things that students can do to help improve their English, so it would be helpful for me to compile a list of things that have worked for me, so that I always have strategies on hand. Some suggestions would be not doing minimal pairs without 1) explaining the rationale for doing so and 2) having examples at the ready (at least for the introduction to minimal pairs).
