Emily - TS #8 - Child

Date/Time: 2/29/16 7:30-8:30 pm
Location: Tutee’s home
Topic/Skill: Comprehension and vocabulary
Overall: We continued reading the article about hail. He was more focused this time (maybe because he did not feel distracted), and it ended up being a great session. The more he read about hail and thunderstorms, the more he wanted to see them in action. So we looked up a few videos about hail, tornadoes, and other large storms. He was very focused and interested in this topic, and even shared a few experiences that he has had on Diamond Head Mountain and during a storm he experienced ( safely and indoors, thankfully). After finishing the article, we reviewed vocabulary words. This article only had 3, so it was easier for him to retain the information. I gave him example sentences for each word, and then asked him to brainstorm. Finally, I asked him to write his own sentences using these vocabulary words on a piece of paper.

Lessons learned: Teaching him less vocabulary words per session seems to be a better approach than teaching the 6 that are usually provided for him in his school book. It's easier for him to retain the information. Asking him to share his experiences (as long as they're related to the article topic), is pretty helpful. It gets him more interested and he ends up asking more questions about the topic this way.
