Michael TS #2

Tutee: Bader
Date/Time: 2/3 @ 12:00
Location: CIES lounge
Topic/Skill: 3rd-person singular "s/es/ies"
Feedback provided to tutee: Encouraged him to use the charts with explanations whenever he felt confused by this topic, or by which form of the verb to use. Tutee had already canceled twice by this point so I explained the need for habitual practice and reinforcement.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Charts definitely helped with this lesson, it seemed. He wasn't grasping what I was trying to explain but once I gave him the visuals I had prepared he made the connection. Also, I need to continue to adapt my speech, mostly speed and articulation, when dealing with lower-level students. When discussing family members, a subject that is very common in the US, I ran into an uncomfortable situation where I was translating the Arabic word for "dead" for the student, which he was trying to use to describe family members. Whatever the circumstances of that, I realized that as a teacher I will need to be familiar with students' backgrounds, in order to avoid such situations in a classroom. In addition, I should be especially sensitive if working in an area where many students have lost family members. Just something to be mindful of.
