Location: Lyon

Topic/Skills: Review
of “short a” and “short e”; pronunciation of “long a” and “long i”;
pronunciation of v, w, and f
Teacher Presentation: We reviewed the vowels we’d practiced last week and moved on to
another set of minimal pairs. Students
appeared to find these easier; there were no problems with the
pronunciation. I presented information
of the different ways in which these sounds are spelled. Students had asked to talk about v, w, and f,
so we did these in the last 10 minutes.
Feedback provided to tutee:
The group is small enough so that I can still hear individual voices when we do
“choral” repetition, so I was able to correct pronunciation without singling
any one out at first. Once I heard largely correct pronunciation,
the students took turns one at a time, and I corrected them as
necessary. (They seem to appreciate this little 1:1 even though it’s
in front of everyone else,)
Lessons learned: This
is such an eager bunch of students! That spirit makes a big difference in the
quality of my teaching. To have them animated
and engaged adds to my own energy and enthusiasm. I enjoy teaching a group as a class more than
1:1 tutoring. I’d like to find or create
more opportunities to do this.
