Olivia Oberg CP#6

Date/Time: 2.25.16 @ 5:00

Location: CIES

What did you learn and share with your conversation partner(s)?: We started our conversation with just talking about our days (since I had just seen her two days before, nothing too exciting had happened). I don’t remember at the exact moment we started talking about our pets, but the majority of our conversation was us talking about them. She brought up how she has a dog, and she was telling me stories about her, like how her and her husband rescued her, how affectionate she is, and how they don’t let her up on the bed with her. Then, she started telling me about her cat, whom she says is her and her husband’s baby. She made it very clear that the cat is the baby and the dog is their pet. I was laughing because although I love dogs, I’m a total cat person. Of course I started telling her about my cats and eventually we were showing each other pictures of our pets. I felt like I was talking to one of my best friends we were having so much fun and laughing while telling each other stories. Not that she was one of my students, but I think it’s really important to connect with each student in some way, not only to create a bond, but also because they will respect you more as a teacher. I’m hoping I can make connections like these when I’m teaching abroad, because it’s fun and it makes the job a lot easier.
