Emily - TS #6 Child
Date/Time: Monday, February 15, 2016, 7:30PM-8:30PM
Location: Tutee’s home
Topic/Skills: Valley of the Moon: the Diary of María Rosalia de Milagros; vocabulary & reading comprehension
Teacher Presentation: Before we began, I asked my tutee if he remembered what the story was about. He seemed to recall it well, although some important facts were missing from his explanation. Because of this, I let him look over the story briefly while simultaneously summarizing what we read last time. We continued the story from where we left off. After finishing the story and answering a few more comprehension questions, we moved on to vocabulary.
Feedback provided to tutee: I really wanted him to grasp the material that he struggled with last time, so the rest of the lesson was focused on vocabulary. First, we reviewed the words together. Then, I had him verbally use them in a sentence. Finally, I had him use 4 of the words in written sentences. He used each of the vocabulary words correctly. However, he still struggled with the word "depict," so I used visual examples from the book and from materials in the room. "This picture depicts a teacher's desk," and "This picture depicts a garden". He also struggled with the word "discard" at first, but he quickly retained the meaning and even gave a great example sentence in the end: "I discarded my old chair".
Lessons learned: After reviewing and repeating the vocabulary words throughout the session, the tutee was able to retain the meaning of most of the vocabulary words
