Olivia TS#3

Child tutee

Date/Time: 1/17/16 @ 11AM-12PM

Location: Books-a-million

Topic/Skill: Spelling

Feedback provided to tutee: I came to this session with about 20 different words I wanted to practice spelling with. I wrote them down on a sheet of paper, but I took out one letter from each word. My tutee did pretty well with filling in the correct letters. We also practiced the sounds that different letters make for the more difficult words. Since he did so well with this activity, I looked up different words that I would say out loud and he would spell them. I started with more simple words, but added in a few tricky ones. I explained how the combination of two letters could make it sound like a different letter. For example, how a gh can make an f sound in the word tough.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned how to improvise when the tutee goes through the material a lot faster than expected. As he was working on the words I gave him, I realized he’d finish them pretty quickly and without much difficulty. I had to think of a different activity to do with him that still related to the lesson. Luckily, we were doing spelling and thinking of a different spelling activity wasn’t difficult.
