Taylor TS #16

Tutee: Andy
Date/Time: Friday, February 19th, 3:30-4:30pm
Location: Leon County Public Library (Children's Section)
Topic/Skill: Listening, Reading, Word Recognition
Feedback provided to tutee: He had a bunch of his favorite books with him again, so I read the one he’d really wanted me to (since it was the last session and all) and asked him some questions about it. Then I did another set of the word recognition game. The words used in this set were from the book I had him read afterwards, in the hope that it would make it easier for him to read through the book (without needing to sound out as many words). I ended it with another reading, asking him questions about this book as well.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I was hoping that the word game would make reading the book smoother, but it only half-worked. He was able to get some of the longer words, but others he didn’t seem to recognize as quickly when they weren’t isolated words. I think a good way to play this game again would be in making sure all of the included words are spelled similarly so they aren’t as easy to recognize (i.e., it’s quite simple to see “next” and “pointed” and know that they aren’t the same word, without necessarily reading the words).
