Topic/Skill: Reading Skills
Feedback provided to tutee: This session was my last session with Astin. He pulled out a book from a series that he has been reading for the last few weeks. He was really excited to read it to me and he made it really far on his own. When he reached a word that he didn't immediately recognize, he would start to lose interest but when he took the time to sound out the word, he usually got it pretty quickly. For particularly difficult words, I would use the word in a few sentences or try to relate it to something in the room or in his daily life. This surprised me with it's effectiveness because Astin would sometimes reproduce the sentence if he recognized the word on a later page!
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you
learned: I learned that there is a definitely feeling of accomplishment when the person you are working with accomplishes something on their own. The first day, Astin and I managed to get through about 5 pages. Today, we almost made it to page 40 of the same level story. I was so proud and seeing Astin's face when he realized just how much he had read made my day. I hadn't expected that feeling but I hope to hang onto it for the future when I have another somewhat difficult student. I learned that I might be able to teach students his age (maybe).
