Feedback provided to tutee: In today's session, we played the hangman game again for Mary to practice her past tense verb usage when talking about what had happened since we had last met. Whenever she made a grammatical mistake while speaking, I wrote the sentence as she had said it on the board. We then went sentence by sentence doing error correction. We had to really focus on a few things like using prepositional phrases and how sometimes the word "home" doesn't have any particles. For example, 'I'm going home tonight.'
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you
learned: I learned that this was a very effective way to not only work on common issues with Mary's speech habits but also is a great way to find new grammar points to work on together. It seemed to give her an opportunity to speak up when she did not understand why her sentences were wrong or if she could use different phrasings for things as well. It was very much an open discussion and although it was a very grammar heavy session, I think that Mary felt like she had accomplished a lot.
