TS #4 -adult tutee - Janire

Date/Time: January 25, 2016 - 3.00 pm - CIES
Topic/Skill: Clauses, For/since
Feedback provided to tutee: My tutee from Saudi Arabia contacted me, because he needed some help with relative clauses. So, he wanted me to explain the rules of this grammar structure. Since he is in foundations level, I provided him basic schema. I explained the difference between what/which relative clauses and when to use them, because he seemed kind confused. After that, I gave him some examples to work on. After he filled the gaps, I correct the errors and tell him why it was incorrect. Finally, I told him to create some relative clause sentences. Overall, he seemed to understand it.

After that, he asked me the differences between for/since. So, what I did is to draw a time-line and explain the difference with years. I provided examples that he is familiar with, such as, “I live in Tallahassee since 2015 (action in progress),” “I will be at CIES for 2 months. (specific action)”

What I learned: I learned how to teach the differences for/since in a very simple way. Also, I realize that culture plays an important role. So, I need to be aware of that when teaching a language. When I say a sentence, the tutee interpreted in another way. So, it is important to be accurate when explaining and do not take things for granted.
