Topic/Skill: Reading comprehension

Feedback provided to tutee: I used the same IELTS website for this session that I had been using for my other tutee to help him prepare for IELTS. We went on the website and he chose a topic that seemed interesting to him. He read the story out loud, and I helped correct his pronunciation for some of the words. I also explained the meaning of the words that he didn’t know. We went through and when we got to the questions part, I told him to look for key words in the questions that he could look for when scanning the text for the answer. He did a pretty good job of picking out the key words he thought he should look for. If he got a question wrong, he was usually between two answers and ended up not picking the correct one. I would explain to him why his answer was wrong, and we would go back into the text to show why the correct answer was right.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that it’s important to remember that our tutees were probably not taught the same strategies as us in their schooling. It’s important to share every bit of knowledge you have on something, no matter how simple, because it could be the key to helping out your tutee.
