Date/Time: 02/11/16, 12-1pm

Location:
CIES

Topic/Skill:
 Debate Skills

Feedback provided to tutee:

My tutee and her partner wanted to practice their debate skills with me in preparation of a class debate. Therefore, I challenged them with various arguments, always playing devil's advocate to whatever responses they gave me. They did an excellent job at incorporating statistical evidence, as well as personal stories to back their claims. My tutee needed to work most on explicitly drawing connections between her story and the arguments she was making. Therefore, as she relayed her story to me, I would challenge her with pieces of the opposition's argument. Overall, she did an excellent job.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
She is very artistic and creative. Hard skills, such as memorizing vocabulary and learning grammar, are much more difficult for her than public speaking, conversational skills, and expository writing. Her debate skills showed this as she had powerful stories but had difficulties showing strong connections between this and statistical evidence.
