Emily - TS#6 - Adult

TS #6 Adult:
Date/ time: February, 2016 3:30 - 4:30pm

Location: Starbucks

Topic Skills: Reading Charts; various practice questions; SPEAK preparation

Feedback provided to tutee: To begin with, my tutee and I looked over the “random questions” portion of the SPEAK preparation packet. We started with the first question, which asked about a specific term used in the reader's major. She chose the word "lighting" and then practiced how to express the significance of lighting in her major (interior design). After practicing with me a couple of times, and then on her own a couple more times, I started timing her. She finished in half the time than was expected of her in the exam. It gave her 60 seconds, she finished in 30. We practiced another similar question, and she once again beat the clock. We then moved on to the chart we worked on last time. First, I allowed her to look over it and remember how to read it. Then, we read it together and discussed different ways to express what the chart says. Once she got a good grasp of it, I timed her speaking. The practice exam gave her 60 seconds once again, and she finished her explanation in 43 seconds.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Hyunji is a quick learner and improviser. It seems like maybe the more vocabulary words and transition words she knows, the better and clearer her explanations are. During this session, she practiced making her explanations longer rather than keeping them short, which is something that she tends to do from time to time.
