What did you learn and share with your conversation partner(s): I
hadn’t seen this conversation partner in a few weeks so I knew we would have a
lot to catch up on. We discussed what we’ve been up to and what we had coming
up soon. My conversation partner is taking a GRE class, so she’s been very busy
and stressed. It’s a big test she’s going to have to take, so she knows how
important the class is. I told her how I finished my TEFL class last week, so I’ll
have a lot more free time. We both agreed that we can’t wait until spring
break, and then we talked about our plans for it. She told me she’s going back
to Peru to visit her family for the week. She is very excited and I’m sure
it’ll be a nice vacation, especially because of how busy she’s been. She also
told me that within the next four(ish) years she wants to move back to Peru
permanently. When I asked her why she said it’s so different there and she’s
treated a lot better. She’s Hispanic, so she’s had instances where people judge
her based on how she looks. This never happens to her in Peru. She just doesn’t
feel like this is her home and I understand what she’s saying and don’t blame
her for wanting to move back. I already knew this, but hearing this from her
just reminded me of how unaccepting and judgemental some people in our culture
can be. She also told me that people in Peru wouldn’t even know I was American
until I started speaking. That gave me insight to her culture in that it’s more
diverse and accepting.
