Taylor TS #14

Tutee: Inhyeong
Date/Time: Tuesday, February 16th, 8:05-9:05pm
Location: FSU – Strozier Library
Topic/Skill: Reading – comprehension, vocab
Feedback provided to tutee: I brought another short story for Inhyeong to read, and guided her in understanding it as she went along. If she came across new vocab or a confusing phrase, I encouraged her to try to use context clues, and if that didn’t work then I provided synonyms or examples. Working like this, she was able to read the whole story and piece together both the plot and the implied details in the story (with some assistance). I also addressed some of the conventions of short stories (such as how dialogue is written/conveyed) to help her with any in the future.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Even if she could try to figure out some of the simpler words on her own, she didn’t feel the need to because of my presence. It’s certainly important to remember that intensive reading is a valid way to read, but in the future I should make it clear if the reading is meant to be extensive if a student has a similar reliance on looking up every word.
