Topic discussed: Today in the cultural exchange we were grouped up based on cultural diversity to work on our capstone project. I was paired with Ado from Niger, Le from Vietnam, and Salem from Kuwait. We discussed how we would like to arrange our poster board and how we wanted to present it. We brainstormed some ideas about the similarities, differences, and stereotypes about our different cultures. We then planned to bring in some pictures for the next time we would meet up.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I had already spoken to Le and Salem a few times during the cultural exchange workshops so I was a little bit more familiar with the cultures of Kuwait and Vietnam. I didn't know much about the culture of Niger. Ado told me that it is very much influenced by Islam and that ethnic identity is very important. One of the differences that he brought up about his culture is that traditionally women wear different styles of face and body make up in order to differentiate themselves from other ethnic groups. One thing that Ado said that really made an impact on me is that he liked how free everyone and everything was in America. People here can dress, act, and pretty much do what they please which isn't really the case in Niger.
