Tutee:
Soongyu
Date/Time:
Friday, February 19th, 9:05-10:05am
Location:
FSU – Strozier Library
Topic/Skill: Speaking,
Writing, Pronunciation
Feedback provided to tutee: I first asked if Soongyu had encountered any
unfamiliar words, phrases, or grammar points since we had last met, but all she
could think of was her unfamiliarity with cursive writing. This was still valid
to discuss, so I clarified that the handwriting style was called cursive and
showed some examples, while explaining that it’s not as widely used/known
anymore, though some people (one of her classmates included) write in cursive. After
this I addressed her pronunciation, specifically the common mix-ups with Korean
students of p/f and b/v, as well as the minimal pair walk/work.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
I wish I had devoted more time to
pronunciation, but the topic was only brought up near the end of the session so
we were only really able to focus on differentiating walk/work. I still think
she has trouble understanding my questions at times, mixing them up with what I’ve
already asked, so I need to work on how to better address that.
