Topic/Skill: Summarizing Skills

Feedback provided to tutee: Today, In-hwa and I read through an article together. Then following one of her teacher's summarizing techniques, we worked on summarizing the article. I worked with In-hwa on determining the "who", "what", "where", "why", and "how" of the reading. It took us a while until she was able to do it on her own but I think that she would be able to summarize a different article in the same way.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I had never thought about different cultures having different ways of summarizing readings! This was a good experience to remind me that the education in other cultures are very different. I was also surprised that my tutee had such a hard time with summarizing readings. It is a skill that native speakers take for granted. It surprised me but it really makes sense that In-hwa found it easier to focus on the small facts and details rather than connecting the larger ideas from the entire work. We need to keep these kinds of things in mind otherwise we will become impatient and frustrated as teachers.
