Julia TS #15 - Fadia

Date/Time: 2/9/16 12 pm
Location: CIES Conference Room
Topic/Skill: Grammar
Feedback provided to tutee: Today Fadia wanted help with the grammar concepts that she had been learning in class. These grammar concepts included possessive pronouns, summarizing, and yes-no questions. I created a worksheet with fill-in-the blank possessive pronouns and also had Fadia create sentences with possessive pronouns. For homework she had to summarize an article about frogs but was confused about how to go about doing so. I guided her as she completed her homework and provided error correction when she finished. I set up a sort of model for her on how to summarize (picking out the most important parts). After she finished with this I answered her questions that she had about yes-no questions and wrote down a few examples.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Even though the English language is not cookie cutter and there are many exceptions, it is often helpful to explain grammar concepts using a model at the foundations level. This made it easier for Fadia to make sense of grammar rules and when her English skills increase she will be able to memorize the exceptions. I was debating on whether creating a model for her because I thought it might confuse her. However, in the end, it was the simplest way to explain grammar points.
