Topic/Skill: Making Conversation with Past Tense Verbs

Feedback provided to tutee: One of Mary's most persistent difficulty is that she has a hard time being understood by native speakers because she mixes her verb tense up when she speaks for any length of time. This has been an ongoing problem. At first, I would correct her with the appropriate verb tense or ask her to repeat the sentence until she realized her mistake but she continues to struggle with self correcting herself as she speaks to others. So I played a kind of Hangman game with her. I asked her to tell me what she had done the day before, being extremely specific and using the past tense. Every time she got a verb tense correct, I would put a tally on the board and each time she made a mistake in the verb tense, I would add a body part to the drawn figure.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that Mary didn't realize how often she made the mistake of mixing up her tenses. Having some sort of visual for her to actually be able to see and "grade" herself, made it easier for me to explain to her how important it is for her to think about her sentences before she says them (at least a little bit). I also learned that everyone could use a good grammar review even if they have been speaking English for years!
