Location: CIES Conference
Topic/Skill: Adverbs and Adjectives
Feedback provided to tutee: Today Fadia wanted help with some grammar concepts that she had been learning in class. She was having a difficult time knowing when to use adjectives and when to use adverbs. I had created a whole plan prior to the tutoring session but Fadia preferred to work on these grammar points instead. I made up a set of example sentences with fill in the blanks where she would have to fill in the proper adjective or adverb. I explained her how sometimes adjectives can be changed into adverbs and when the appropriate time to use these parts of speech were. She appreciated the extra one-on-one practice because it was much easier for her to ask questions.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that it is very important to be well-versed in English grammar when tutoring English. Even though Fadia is in the Foundations level class, it was still important that I be able to explain exactly when and why either an adjective or an adverb was used in each instance. Also, thinking on your feet is important because I had to create sample example sentences on the spot for her with no preparation. If she had been learning a grammar concept that I was not as familiar with setting up a practice activity for her to do on the spot would have been very difficult and probably not as helpful.
