Date/Time: Saturday, January 30, 2016, 11:00-12:00
Location: Tutee’s home
Topic/Skills: Energy Island: The Danish island that lives off of
renewable and nonrenewable energy. Reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Teacher Presentation: I started the session by asking if he was familiar with renewable
and nonrenewable resources. He ended up knowing quite a lot about it! He knew
about natural resources and started listing all of the ones he knew about. From
then, I gave him a bit of a preview about the story we were about to read
(which was about this topic exactly): “did you know there’s an island that only
uses natural resources to survive and get it’s energy?” I showed him pictures
of the island (named Samso) on google images. Then we opened up his book to the
story of “Energy Island”.
Feedback provided to tutee: My tutee is a great reader and comprehends everything. He will occasionally struggle with pronunciation, but I will
usually guide him through the word if that does happen. Information gets to him
better when he has access to visual examples of whatever it is he is reading,
so we looked up Youtube videos and google image pictures. He was very
interested in wind turbines, and was pretty chatty sometimes...most likely
because he was interested in the subject.
Lessons learned: My tutee learned the meaning of new vocabulary words such as “Renewable,”
“Nonrenewable,” “Install,” and “coincidence”. He also learned about what “biomass”
is, since it was mentioned in his book. I explained that biomass power is
energy that is made from plants, and that it can be used to make oil,
electricity, and heat furnaces. We also found a gif that explains how electric
cables are placed under the sea from the Danish mainland to Samso Island.
