Topic Discussed: The topic discussed this week was stereotypes and generalizations, and the difference between the two. students were split up into pairs to discuss stereotypes and generalizations about each others cultures.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I was paired with a student from Thailand to discuss stereotypes and generalizations in our culture. She first asked me why Americans do not use the metric system, which was a question I did not have a good answer for. I did express to her though that many Americans see the metric system as superior to our own even though we do not use it. We then talked about the stereotype of all Thai people being friendly. She said that this is because when foreign visitors come to Thailand, Thai people reaction to a language barrier is to just smile at them.
